Farm Happenings
The tomatoes are d e a d.
One day I turned the hose on at 4pm and then forgot about it until 1 on the next day.
We have clay soil.
...
I composted and mulched heavily in the rows of tomatoes but the water was too much.
Redemption though!!!! I went to the farmers market in St. John and talked to the produce guy about getting a couple bushels of tomatoes. The canning tomatoes are only 17.00 a bushel!! So I'll be grabbing a couple of those in the coming weeks to start canning and freezing.
We went blueberry picking in michigan on Friday and got almost 10 lbs of the sweet antioxidant goodness. We also probably ate 5 lbs while we were picking. They're in the freezer for now until I find the recipes I want to can. I'm thinking blueberry syrup, pie filling, jam.......yumm!!
Today I plan on harvesting the rest of the onions. For storage, I think I'm going to braid them and hang them in one of the back rooms in the basement. The humidity level down there has been bad, but we got a dehumidifier and it seems to be helping.
And now, our Bethel is home. I thought for sure we wouldn't have a cow for a couple of years, but after only a couple months of living here, she's here!!!! She is doing great on the tethering line. No tangles that she hasn't been able to get out of. But we did have a little scare today. I moved her this morning to the big clover patch, and thought she would enjoy it while we ran out this morning. There was a little shade so I thought she'd be ok for a couple hours. We came home and walked to the backyard and she wasn't there!!! She had pulled the line out of the ground. My heart sank. I stood there, desperately trying to figure out where to begin looking. How do you find a cow when you have 9 foot tall corn all around you?? And as I glanced over the yard I saw her, laying under the tree we had her tethered near yesterday. Sweet girl!!!!!! She yanked her line out because she wanted more shade. Lesson learned!! I'm sure this won't be our first learning experience. Her precious owner said that she would probably be bellowing all night the first couple days, just getting used to her new place. She hadn't made a peep. She seems to be content and happy. And we love her.

Later Farm Happenings
I had a ginormous piece of coconut pie tonight. And before that I had 1 and a half bacon cheeseburgers from Kilgus farm. And I sat on the couch destroying myself with the bad self talk because of all I ate.
Then I went outside.
...
Then I went outside.
...
And bethel was gone
So I yell for Doug and the kids and we begin the search. Doug finds her in the bean field on the north east side of the house. Now up until this moment, she has been docile and sweet. But when we walked up to her in the bean field she was having none of it. She took off like a bucking bronco, bucking her legs like.....a bucking bronco.
And the chase was on.
She ran north through the fields with me chasing behind her. This was not a time for speed walking, so my ridiculous running took place. I tried to run her up from the east so she'd head back home. As I was running like a pregnant elephant, Doug came speeding down the driveway in the car to head her off at the street. Doug succeeded in stopping her before the road, and as I looked on, in the distance, I saw my husband take the most heroic leap I've ever seen, and then disappear into the ditch below. He was trying to jump over to get to Bethel. A second later, he crawled up the other side, still alive.
The chase continued for what seemed like an hour, but I think was only 15 minutes. She eventually walked back to the house and would only let trey get near her. I hope I haven't scarred our relationship after she had to witness me running and yelling and flailing my arms with a lead rope.
So trey got her. We said that's it!!! She's going in the shed, in her brand new pen Doug was so proud of .
That arrangement lasted less than 5 minutes. She busted right through the wood.
So back out to the yard we went and we figured out how she got off her line. When I put it together, I forgot to tighten the c clamp thingy with plyers. .
I have to stop forgetting things.
So we hooked her back up. Tightened the stake in the ground and put it in Gods hands.
Well Doug did
I keep checking on her to make sure she's still there.
And after all that vigorous exercise, I no longer feel bad about that coconut cream pie
