Farm happenings
We butchered our first chicken tonight. I'm not gonna lie, it was really sad. She had a terribly twisted leg and had been getting around ok. But today she spent the day in the coop alone, so I knew it was time.
The videos we watched were nothing like the real thing. I won't go into details but it was just terribly sad.
Then came the de feathering which took a while. I was still feeling down while we did it, but this is one of the reasons were homesteading. To... get in touch with our food, where it comes from and connect with the source. If it wasn't us doing it, it was someone else in a factory with no feeling or respect for the bird. .
After we defeathered, we watched the video again on eviscerating. Again, it was not as easy as the video. But we hung in there and got her all cleaned out. . I've never loved Doug more, and repeatedly asked him as he was pulling guts out if he still loved me.
So as the sun sets in our backyard, and as Doug calls everyone he knows to tell them we butchered our first chicken, our bird is in the fridge. We know she had a good life, and ran around as well as she could with her leg. She got to lay in the sun, and take dust baths, something Perdue chickens never get to experience. She got to eat tomatoes and bugs and watermelon, and most importantly she was respected and loved by our family.
