Farm happenings
We have another chicken with badly twisted legs. He's been getting around ok still but it's heart wrenching watching him hobble around. So this weekend may be his end. I've been watching videos all day on butchering chickens and I'm extremely thankful I have a husband who is willing to do it. If it comes down to me there will be a lot of sobbing and wailing on my part. The other chickens are doing well though. Were hoping to get eggs from our leghorns in 6 more weeks.
I just spent an hour talking to and coddling my tomato plants. Loving them, pruning them, asking them to produce more than the few they have on their branches. I recently fertilized them again and they seem to be doing better. I have a lot of tomato canning and freezing to do and I hope they can keep up with my plans! Everything else is growing well. I have one squash growing and few baby cucumbers. The onions are just about done and the peppers have perked up out of their funk. Those darn tomatoes though- I yearn for the day I can go pick one, slice it up and inhale it with some Worcester sauce.
Tomorrow I am going to see Evangeline and the dairy she is at. It's called Kilgus farmstead and they produce jersey milk. Their whole milk actually has cream sitting on the top!!!!!! They sell to whole foods and lots of restaurants. I couldn't have asked for a better breeder!! Pictures to come tomorrow.
The house is still ehhh. It's been so nice out I haven't done much to the inside but clean. The first thing to get painted will be the kitchen....soon.
My sister came over today with her trusty power drill and graciously drilled some pallets together to make me my first compost bin!!! The soil here is like cement and I've been reading into the deep mulching method of gardening. This requires a lot of compost and it would cost a fortune to cover my garden space, so hopefully I can cut the cost with my own. Just another thing on the farm, that I have no idea what I'm doing with. But hopefully by the spring I'll have lots of "black gold" for the garden
That's all for now. Pictures of Evangeline to come tomorrow!!
